Grace began taking the oral maintenance chemotherapy drug, Cabometyx, at home after finishing infusion chemotherapy as an attempt to stop her cancer cells from growing and spreading. The medication turned her hair grey, caused serious stomach discomfort and rashes and she elected to stop taking the medication. In January during her schedule 3 month scans, we found more lung metastasis.
Friends in Columbus, NE host a decorated tree raffle fundraiser for Grace to celebrate er favorite Christmas holiday. Grace and Carrie had so much fun decorating trees, making giant snowflakes and crafting for the event.
The family was down with COVID during Christmas and New Year's. As a cancer patient, Grace received Paxlovid to reduce her symptoms and was only sick a few days. She commented, "COVID is nothing compared to cancer and chemo." Carrie did not get the drug and fought secondary lung infections for another 90 days. The family spent the holidays streaming movies in bed, Grace played Minecraft with friends, and got lots of cuddles in with Snickerdoodle.
The oral maintenance chemotherapy drug, Cabometyx, continues to cause serious stomach discomfort and rashes for Grace. She starts taking allergy and stomach pre chemo drugs to overcome the symptoms and persists on taking the medication.
Grace who adored everything crafting, worked with her mom to make handmade ornaments and bows to tell her cancer story for her upcoming December fundraiser.
As a homebound learner for her second year in Middle School, Grace was a devoted student and earned straight As in her classes even through surgeries and inpatient chemo stays. She worked throughout the year to keep pace with her peers and worked hard to complete assignments and special projects.
In an attempt to prevent new lung metastasis for Grace, her team recommends she try taking Cabometyx, an oral or maintenance chemotherapy drug. The medication is $28,000 a month before insurance and causes serious stomach upset and skin irritation for Grace, but she continues to take it.
Grace found a gorgeous designer dress to war to her first Angels Among Us fundraiser event. She looked beautiful and was so brave to attend with her gorgeous bald head and her super thin body. Grace was even ore surprised to see her fellow cancer friend, Kylie there too! The girls had an amazing night visiting the dessert buffet a zillion times and celebrating each other.
Grace and Carrie participated in Trunk or Treat at Bethany Lutheran church. Grace had so much fun decorating the trunk and handing out candy to all the adorable kids.
Grace and Snickerdoodle were honored to give Dr. Ford a donation to continue his osteosarcoma research at Children's Hospital in Omaha, NE-a cause very close to Grace's heart. She was so proud to be honored and thanked LesLee and her many volunteers at Lolo's Angels who washed a lot of cars to raise money for the opportunity.
Grace finished her final chemo treatment in August (her second year of therapy) but became neutropenic and needed blood products. She was not in the mood for a photo that day and gave her mom a sassy face.
Grace turned 14-years-old and a friend who is a chalk artist made her a GIANT birthday message with Snickerdoodle!! Grace saw the message as soon as she got home from the hospital from chemo and was so surprised! Another friend at Omaha Balloon made her a beautiful balloon arch to celebrate her day.
Grace, Snickerdoodle and her mom took advantage of a beautiful Sunday morning to explore the Village Pointe Farmers Market for Grace's favorite apples and seasonal veggies. They finished for lunch on the patio at Bravo's as a yummy belated birthday outing (Grace had her favorite spaghetti and meatballs).

After months of training, Snickerdoodle made her first trip with Grace as a service dog and she did amazing! For never being in a hospital before she was confident and did an incredible job of leading Grace, pacing with her wheelchair and helping her to stay calm during her appointments.
Grace was so excited to open the mail to find a special t-shirt with signed messages of encouragement from a girls youth group back home with her FAVORITE bible verse: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength Philippians 4:13.
Grace had eczema and challenges with her skin before she had cancer. The constant dressing changes for in-patient chemo infusions were a constant challenge for Grace. Her skin required special prep and care for port access to prevent severe rashes and infection.
Grace felt up for a ride to her favorite bundt cake bakery and chose two of her favorite mini cakes to enjoy at home. Snickerdoodle thought they smelled so yummy she wanted a tast too.
Grace's Child Life Specialist gave her a special Bead of Courage to recognize Grace's strength and for inspiring other cancer patients and ill children on the pediatrics floor.
Grace was in the hospital for another round o inpatient chemo. She struggled with eating and sleep a little more than usual, but rested like crazy once she got home.
A new French bakery opened up not far from UNMC and Grace couldn't wait to check it out. She found some of her favorite treats like macarons, but tried new pastries for the first time. Carrie sipped strong espresso coffee while Grace gobbled up milk bread, croissants and a cranberry bun.

After being on a ventilator last month for sepsis and pneumonia, Grace spent most of the month resting and relaxing at home. She continued with chemo neat the end of May and began taking a high-dose antibiotic to prevent infection with infusions in the future.
After a good groom, Snick was ready for some play time. Carrie was going to take her for a walk when the lawn sprinklers kicked on and there went the nice haircut-lol.
Grace surprised everyone when she asked to start swimming again to rebuild her physical strength. In pure Grace form, she swam, dove and was able to hold her breath like she did before she was on a vent.
Grace continued with in-patient chemo as prescribed by her oncology team. She was more tired for this chemo as it was the first chemo after her invasive VATS thoracic lung surgery.
Grace received a GIANT bag of toys, treats, craft supplies, her favorite pour painting supplies, and more in a huge backpack from Bags of Fun in Omaha, NE.
Grace was admitted to UNMC with a 102 neutropenic fever. After admission, her fever spiked to 105 and she was moved to the Pediatric ICU. Only 12 hours after being transferred, doctors confirmed she had sepsis and pneumonia. She was placed on a ventilator for over a week and received high dose antibiotics with 14 whole blood and platelet infusions to help her fight the infections.
After a week on the ventilator, Grace wakes up, but is unable to speak for three days. When she recovers her voice she shares her near death experience meeting Jesus and refusing to go into the gates of heaven because she's not ready to die. She refused to leave mom and Snickerdoodle without saying goodbye. She spends another 5 days in the PICU before being moved to the pediatrics floor.
Carrie took Grace's Easter Basket to the PICU not knowing if Grace would make it. She asked for prayer on social media and the request went viral wit over 40,000 people viewing the post. Prayers and messages of encouragement flooded her inbox. After Grace woke up, she was able to enjoy the fluffy bunny ears and necklace, but wouldn't be able to eat the sweets for another week.
Grace's first dose of her new chemo didn't have as bad of a reaction as her prior chemo from 2021, but that changed after she had multiple doses.
Grace was an accomplished baker and loved following YouTube cooks and trying out their recipes. When she saw a recipe for caramel cinnamon monkey bread she wanted to try it because she could still taste cinnamon with chemo.
Grace really struggled with nosebleeds when her counts would come down from chemo. This particular day she was having them so bad we couldn't get them to stop and her nose bled through her transfusion.
After a year of treatment for the cancer in her shoulder in 2021 , Grace learns the osteosarcoma has spread to her lungs. She must have an invasive VATS thoracic lung surgery to remove the cancer nodules then resume chemo for the next 7 months. The news is devastating to her and her mom. They are told Grace has a total of 17 nodules.
Carrie caught this adorable moment with Grace playing with Snickerdoodle in the yard when she was a puppy. Snick LOVED to be chased. It was one of her favorite games.
Grace chose to rehome her Serama therapy chicken, Mr Beans, to a young boy from Iowa involved in poultry with 4H. She was sad to see him go, but knew she couldn't give him the time and attention he would need if she was going to go through surgeries and chemo again.
Grace was granted service dog training for Snickerdoodle a week before her first lung surgery. The team also brought her favorite celebration cake from the Cheesecake Factory.

Snickerdoodle came to her forever home on New Year's Day thanks to the generous donation of a local family and Grace was over the moon excited. She spent the week preparing her room and getting everything ready. When she arrived the two played and played. Grace was so happy.
Grace adored playing with Snickerdoodle and she was an adorable fluffy puppy with a giant belly. Their bond was so strong the first day they were together.
Friends gave us their condo in Florida to stay for a week. Grace saw the beach, played in the waves, collected shells, chased Snickerdoodle, went to the local fruit market, and caught geckos.
